Colivas is back and so is clijsters

  • Sep. 16th, 2009 at 9:20 PM
So am I writing here again,

Kon colivas returns back to linux kernel development with BFS(Brain Fuck Scheduler).

http://ck.kolivas.org/patches/bfs/bfs-faq.txt

And Kim clijsters returns to professional tennis and wins the US open.

http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/tennis/usopen09/news/story?id=4471433

Waiting for Justine's.

Life does offer comebacks, hopefully there is one for me as well.

Update: Just noticed that the both the comebacks mentioned here have their first and the last names starting with the same letter. What does that tell me?? Perhaps I am too hopeful that life will offer me a comeback.
While reading through Krugman's blog entry, I got a chance to go through some of the contents in this paper. Interesting that it was a 2005 paper, may be some strong thoughts should have been given then to what Rajan wrote. What strikes the most is attribution of technological growth to financial development(?) in the paper. May be it is the same technological growth which is allowing finance novices like me to get information and write this blog entry, which in essence is the problem itself as discussed in the paper. Its one thing to blame the regime of George Bush for the current financial mess but really another to know why we are in the current situation, its just that he was the president when this happened. Yes, iraq war costed something but is surely not the sole or the biggest reason for the financial trouble the world is in today.

This thanksgiving I found some precious time to visit Death valley and Grand canyon along with one of my office colleagues. So we set out on a four day bus tour to death valley. The lack of driving experience of me and my friend in the US made sure we took the bus tour rather than go by car(which on hindsight should be the best means of travel provided one has done enough homework on the places he is visiting). So we started early on thursday(Nov 27th 2008) from Fremont, boarded the bus at Milpitas at around 9.30 am. Its been a dream for both of us to visit grand canyon, one of the natural wonders of the world. So we were excited to be on the journey to see the marvel of grand canyon and the beauty of death valley on the way.

Interestingly we found the entire bus was full of indian visitors, so we felt at home. The guide was a french guy blessed with excellent knowledge of the places we would be visiting and the driver,an american, with a great sense of control for driving. On thanksgiving day(a cloudy day) we went through modesto, fresno, kingsburg, mojave before stopping at barstow for a overnight stay. We had thanksgiving dinner(oh yes, turkey) in a restaurant situated in the truck stop of barstow.

The next day morning we started early and went through the desert terrain of mojave before reaching death valley national park through pahrump. Death valley is not just barren land as you would expect in a desert, but it encompasses some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world. The different strata of colors(greenish, yellowish, reddish, blueish tinge) on the mountains are as if a artist has drawn it and it looks so wonderful to be real. We stopped at the salt flats in bad water basin, then had a short trek near furnace creek and another one at the wonderful Zabriskie point. Because we travelled by bus we were not able to drive through Dante's view and Artist's Drive which are supposed to be very beautiful. I was taken aback by the beauty of the valley and I would surely visit it again(by car).

Zabriskie point-Death Valley

After finishing sight seeing at death valley we visited Las Vegas, the most ostentatious city in the world. On a realistic note, both me and my friend were not interested in visiting vegas, but since we took the bus tour we did not have an option out. For more reasons than one I did not want to visit vegas. I believe that vegas over signifies the debt ridden over-consumption(at least for the past 2 decades) nature of the US as a whole. No better time to write about this than at a point when the US economy is looking for more answers than one. Its mind boggling to note that these grandiose casinos are blown away and rebuild at the faster rate than one could imagine. There are more pressing problems in the world to spend money on (yes even in the US as people should have realized by now) rather than on gambling and rebuilding grandiose resorts umpteen times. Yes, you can disagree by saying as a business it serves the interests of many but i am not here to make a point, its just what I believe in. I am not writing this to change the reader's belief. I did make sure that I did not spend a nickel in Las Vegas except for food and the accommodation which was part of the bus tour package. I surely did visit the strip and saw quite a few of the free shows in bellagio, venetian, rio, ti etc., The musical fountain in bellagio is worth a visit. I did get a share of appreciation from the guide for pointing out the lights of the rio casino represent "Christ The Redeemer" in Rio De Janeiro.

The next day morning we started towards grand canyon. On the way, we visited hoover dam and marveled the construction for a few minutes. And then we made it to the south rim of the grand canyon. The canyon was just majestic. Words or pictures cannot say how wonderful it is to be there staring at the beauty of the canyon, one has to be there to feel it. One explorer said about the canyon -

"It is remarkable how soon the world fades in to complete oblivion and this rock bound solitude is the only existence which seems real. I once spent 10 days on the plateau, at the end of the week I had forgotten the names of my most intimate friends and on the 9th day I spent several minutes trying to recall by own name. I was so in significant a part of those terrific silences, to have a name hardly seemed worthwhile. One could forget a great sorrow in a month here. "

In front of The Grand Canyon

On the way back, by coincidence the space shuttle endeavor landed in the California Air base located in the mojave desert instead of kennedy space center, florida. We were traveling back through the desert and were able to see plumes of the shuttle. Little did we realize that Space shuttle endeavor was there until we read the news in the evening. All in all, it was a great trip to remember.

xcode quits unexpectedly on startup

  • Dec. 25th, 2008 at 5:25 PM
I spent the first half of christmas day trying to resolve "Xcode quits unexpectedly" on Xcode start up. I have not used Xcode for long postponing some development work i wanted to do on Mac OS X. A google search using the the contents of the terminal dump "layout bitmap too short:ASKScriptView" led me to this blog. It had clear instructions on what to do and I followed the same and Xcode started well. Again a blog entry saved my day and helped me resolve the problem. Just to keep the goodwill of blogs helping people resolve such problems, here i am posting an entry. I should admit that its frustrating if OS X updates causes such problems and i did not find much information in apple support site. Anyways all is well that ends well, i was just relieved to see xcode running well on my MBP again.

College Nostalgia and a shot of paneer soda

  • Sep. 26th, 2008 at 9:00 AM
Before i begin with the details of this post, i was surprised to see a comment in my last blog entry asking whether this is a dead blog. Yes, it is true that this blog has been dead for the past 3 months. During this time i have been busy with good and important things in my personal life. Ofcourse, there were hiccups but as usual they have taught me lessons worth for leading a good life in the future. Anyways i am not trying to justify by giving valid reasons for keeping my blog in hibernation. The fact is I was lazy and my access to internet was limited during this period. Ok let me in jump in to the details of this particular entry.

Last week I was in trichy and had to visit my alma matter for getting some paper work done. For the uninitiated I graduated in 2003 from Instrumentation and Control Engg. Department of REC,Trichy( now popularly known as NIT,Trichy). I had visited the veeramakali amman temple situated in a village nearby keeranur along with my family on the morning of 22nd September 2008. On the way back to home, at around 12.30 am my family dropped me off in the main entrance of NIT trichy and they headed home. So here I was almost five years after my graduation in front of the well known administrative block. On a philosophical note, life has its interesting twists and turns, it takes it own course and as humans i guess its better if we just follow it rather than try to change the course. Yes, I am ashamed that i have not visited REC Trichy in the past five years after my graduation but thats the truth and i accept it with a sense of remorse. Anyways, with a sense of nostalgia i was in my college campus trying to see if something has changed. Everything looked similar including the small shortcuts which i used to walk to my department from admin block. There were some new buildings(the lecture hall complex),better paved pathways for walking and remarkably glaring blue colored boards in front of each department. So i reached my department during the lunch hours and hence it was deserted. Had a look around the department, captured a photograph of it and then i headed to straight to the college canteen for lunch. Bought a lunch coupon for 20 rupees and enjoyed the meal in the canteen. It was like i became a student again and interestingly people around me in the canteen thought i was a student there.I happily shared some thoughts with them, had a nice lunch and surprisingly when i was washing my hands, i bumped in to three of my past teachers. I wished them, refreshed their memories and told them politely that I will meet them in the department in the afternoon hours and again started walking around the college.

So after walking a bit in the hot sun i came back to the department at around 2.30 pm and headed straight in to my past lecturer's cabin. He had taught me PCI(Personal computers and interfacing) and OOD(object oriented design) if my memory is correct. Had a nice technical talk with him for about an hour. He was interested in knowing what i was working on and he(as usual) gave some inputs on whats hot in the industry and what isn't. After meeting him i met the lecturer under whom i did my final year project and had a talk with her about how the department student strength has considerably gained over last few years. Then i met the HOD and other lecturers who had taught me during my bachelors. I was not able to meet only one professor who had taught me control systems,Data structures and other courses. Then i went to the ever famous juicy in NITT and had a mango juice. After that i returned back to the admin block to get my paper work done and was thinking of returning home once it is done. Then it was more by destiny than by design that I met the professor whom i did not meet in the department. The staff in the admin block doing my paper work was little bit miffed with me(for reasons i am unable to comprehend yet) and he made sure he delayed the process a bit. That in turn, made me wait a bit longer and as a result of this, i bumped in to my professor in the IC and SR(industrial consultancy and sponsored research) department. Talked with him for few minutes and then got the paper work done in the admin block. In my heart, i thanked the staff who made sure i waited longer but externally i clearly expressed him that i was upset.

I returned home via tiruverumbur by bus. The buses were crowded as usual and the ever so friendly people made me feel at home. Contrastingly the wait in tiruverumbur for taking a bus to OFT(Ordnance Factory Trichy) was much shorter this time. Based on empirical data residing in my mind, i knew that it would take really long for me to see a bus destined to OFT. So with composure, I ordered paneer soda(sweet carbonated water) in a shop and was slowly sipping it. Then to my surprise, i found that a bus to OFT has arrived. I made sure it is OFT by rubbing my eyes and clearly seeing that again(:) yeah thats an exaggeration). Only me and some of my friends whom i had taken home during my college days know the average wait time is usually much longer. Thereby instead of sipping the paneer soda further i had it in one shot and ran hard to catch the bus. I was just in time to be on the footsteps of the crowded bus. Enjoyed my footstep travel experience back home.

All in all i had a nice time being in NITT again.

Farewell to Justine

  • May. 16th, 2008 at 7:37 AM
It takes a shock retirement of my favorite tennis player to get me back to blogging. I have stopped blogging due to many reasons, the most important thing being work taking most of my time. But anyways thats not an excuse, frankly i was lazy. Here i am blogging again due to henin.

I have blogged about henin back here and here. I watch quite a lot of sports and follow lot of sports personalities. I like sachin, federer, gilchrist, schumi, woods, annika, alonso, kimi, flintoff etc.., But i was not a big fan of any one of them. Most of my friends see me as level headed emotionless guy when it comes to watching sports. I am not all that disheartened by failures of my favorite team or a sportsperson. But then Justine holds a different place.I was close to a being a fanatic of Henin but i was forced to stop there. She announced her retirement yesterday. The reasons for me to be a fan of henin are hazy, the main one having to do with the fact that i started following her tennis when she was new on the tour and predicted that she would have a great future. That is the joy of an ardent sports watcher. To predict future stars. And there are more things, her impeccable conduct on and off the field, for her fighting spirit both off the court(the virus) and in the court, her backhand etc.,. Everytime i watched henin play, the feeling was different. It was as if i found a new meaning to watch sports. I was always happy to find a friend who likes justine's tennis. I enrolled in her website. Followed her play around the world. Still i will have regrets of not being a complete fan. I wanted to watch her play in real and that would remain a dream forever. The wimbledon still remains a dream and will again remain a dream forever. I would continue to curse the heroics of marton bartoli forever for that.

All the best Juju, for whatever life holds for you in the future. Although it is sad that we can't watch you play professional tennis anymore, we all enjoyed your wonderful journey in the field of tennis.

Is cricket a gentleman's game anymore ?

  • Jan. 6th, 2008 at 9:31 PM
If anybody still feels cricket is a gentleman's game a quick look in to the just finished Sydney test match would prove them otherwise. I have not blogged for three months, sure I have been busy but I would attribute the reason to my laziness rather than being busy. So it takes a highly controversial and dubious cricket test match to wake me up to blog. digg it would suggest that there is no need for me to write on this test match. But then as long time fan of the game, here I am expressing my views on the test match.

Three things to be discussed
1. Harbhajan's ban
2. Umpiring decisions
3. Kumble raising a question on Australian team's sportsmanship

Harbhajan's ban:

I waited till the night, just to make sure I would be able to write about this. Harbhajan Singh stands banned for three test matches with immediate effect by match referee Mike Proctor. Racism has no place in any sport, for that matter in any other thing. But the question here is on what evidence was it proved that Harbhajan used the word 'monkey' on Symonds. The answer is Mathew Hayden and Michael Clarke. There is no audio or video evidence, umpires say they did not hear it, Sachin says he did not hear it. So on the evidence of people who don’t care to walk when they edge to slip fielders (leave about edging it to the keeper), Mr. Proctor decides to ban Bhajji for three matches. Ok fair enough, Bhajji used the word 'monkey' on Symonds and stands banned for three test matches which should be the case if he had really used that word. Now a dig in to the past might reveal that Glenn Mcgrath once called Jayasuriya a black monkey in 1995 and TV replays had pretty much conclusive evidence to that. But he got away. I cannot believe Australians are making a case out of this, they are the top sledgers in the world. But in this matter, international cricket is in trouble as the ping-pong has already started with Indians charging Brad Hogg on using abusive language (rumour mill says the word is 'bastard').Lets see what Mr.Mike Proctor will do in the Perth hearing later this month. Then we will decide who is the real racist. This incident sets a bad precedent for the future of international cricket. Teams will go on the offensive charging players for any word said on the field. What word fits the definition of the racist word is anybody's guess. So controversial times ahead and its a pity that the greatest sledging team on earth started it all.

2. Umpiring decisions

Well umpiring decisions have been a part and parcel of the game for long and will be. Why? Because umpires are humans and humans make errors. Its a difficult job being a referee in any sport and cricket is a complex game which makes the job more tough. But I should say, Test teams touring Australia in recent years have been on the receiving end. Cricket is a game won on critical moments and when touring teams in Australia have a chance of winning or saving the test match, they get a shocker or two from the umpires. My memory goes back to AUS V NZ series few years back when a nick of Steve Waugh was heard all over Australia but by the man in white coat. And NZ were having a great chance of forcing the aussies on the backfoot then. Recent memory of a horrendous decision for sangakara’s blistering knock of 192 is another decision. It was a vital moment in the game then with SL well on course for the chase of 507. In the Sydney test India did not have one shocker but had innumerable shockers at really vital moments. Here they are
a) Australia were 34/2 when Ponting clearly nicked one to Dhoni. I was watching the match sleepily at that moment and could confirm without watching the reply that there was a nick. Probably Mr.Benson was in full sleep at daytime in Australia. Wake up Mr.Benson, you have contributed a great deal in the match. Well Ponting was given out lbw, later when he got an inside edge. But unfortunately Australia were not 34/2 by then. Moments matter!!!
b) But still Australia slumped to 193/6 and was once under pressure. 19 year old Ishant induces a nick of Symonds which again the entire crowd could hear but Mr.Bucknor. Bucknor has a disliking towards India in umpiring which should be looked in to seriously. Bucknor did more blunders when he refused to go the third umpire thinking that he has eyesight of a hawk. But then by that moment Symonds has already rubbed in the salt to India’s wounds.
c) A less controversial no ball bowled happened to Wasim jaffer. May be the umpires would have thought no-balls are allowed in Test Cricket.
d) For once in India’s favour, Sachin gets a close call for lbw in his favour by Mr.Benson on 37. Nevertheless a important moment in the game as sachin goes on to make 154.
d) Hussey nicks one to Dhoni off RP singh. If given out, might have been the turning point of the match. Australia was leading by 120 odd runs and India needed a wicket badly.
e) Now comes the biggest shocker. Rahul Dravid was on 38 and India looked sure of saving the test match. Mr.Bucknor plays a blitzkrieg for australia by giving Dravid out. Dravid’s gestures on returning to the pavilion said it all. I was surprised the ever-reliable Gilchrist appealed for the catch.
f) Ganguly given out on 51. Well it has happened many times in the past and particularly with Australia. They claim catches, which are not clean and get angry when you question them about it. Michael Clarke refused to walk and wait for the umpire’s decision when he nicked one to Dravid in the 1st slip the day before. And when interviewed he said he has always waited for the umpires decision. Well Mr.Clarke you need not wait when you nick one to the slip or scoop one to deep midwicket. Now he claims a catch which Ganguly thinks is not taken cleanly. But then Mr.Benson asks Ponting who in turn confirms it from the greatly reliable Michael Clarke.Ha Ha !!! Joke of the day!!!! My memories goes back to Michael Slater in 2001 series when he does not catch Dravid cleanly and goes on to sledge Dravid when he stood his ground. Ironically Slater is a commentator now and he still maintains words of such fielders should be believed. I have a message to Ponting here, who maintains that the fielders words should be taken in such cases. Mr.Ponting put aside your double standards and start walking when you nick (atleast on big nicks like the one you had in 1st innings) rather than taking the words of fielders. Remember Ponting said Murali Kartik should have walked after nicking one in the recently concluded one-day series in India. In current scenario, when there is so much pressure in international cricket you cannot blame the players for not walking off or claiming inconclusive catches. But then you cannot have double standards either.

3.Kumble raising a question on Australian team's sportsmanship

Well!!! That’s a big claim and Australia will look at it in an offensive manner. I could not help thinking how could this series be played in a congenial manner from here on. May be Kumble was very angry but then he could have been more subdued.

More to come…………..IND v AUS

Update: I have deleted some comments which were not in the right spirit. I understand emotions run high in India regarding this. I have friends from different countries who might read this. If you still want to comment based on your emotions please feel free to leave your real name at the end of the comment. Coming back to the issue, I am having to see BCCI throwing in the weight and sachin also doing the best he can do.

T20 champions INDIA!!!

  • Sep. 25th, 2007 at 7:16 PM
If at all a game could unite and bring happiness cutting across religions, the rich and the poor, different political parties, it is cricket in India.Cricket in India is a religion which bridges the people of different religions and diverse cultures. Right from an autorickshaw puller to the country's richest can speak passionately about cricket. The country has a billion cricketing experts. So when a young indian team wins a twenty twenty world cup beating pakistan in finals, its a great excuse for the entire nation to smile. Joy was unbound yesterday night in India. From kashmir to kanyakumari the rich, the poor, hindus, muslims and christians celebrated across india. For once political parties did not have a difference of opinion. I am proud to be part of this joy. Great work team india and keep going.

As promised in midst of all the techinical and sports ramblings I write, here is a write up on my Mt.Fuji experience. To see my Mt.Fuji photos click here.
Climbing Mt.Fuji was one of the most strenuous at the same time an adventurous and exciting exercise I have undertook in my life. Last month when I was in japan, I traveled to Tokyo for sight seeing with one of my friends there. We had no real intentions of going to Mt.Fuji as time was very limited with us. But on the way to Tokyo by Limited express trains from Kobe,we were excited to see the Fuji station. I inquired with a Japanese co-passenger whether Mt.Fuji is nearby for which his answer was yes and we got down in the Fuji station. From Fuji we took a train to Fujinomiya from where buses fly to the the go-gome or 5th station from which most trekkers climb Mt.Fuji. But we missed the bus at 3 o clock in Fujinomiya and the next bus was slated to come at 5 o clock. So we inquired a taxi driver how much it would cost to go-gome. He said 8600 yen and also as a testimony to the fact that people are nice and honest in japan, he told that a bus to go-gome would cost 2500 yen per person and also got us a bus time table chart. But we still traveled by the
taxi as time was limited. On the way to go-gome we enjoyed the wonderful sights of Fuji. We shook our head saying yes to most things the taxi driver told to us on the way in spite of we saying to him that we don't understand Japanese in Japanese. But he was a nice guy and probably trying to let us know more abt Mt.Fuji, climbing, weather etc.,We reached go-gome in about 45 minutes. A large perfectly cone shaped volcanic mountain welcomed us at the go-gome(Kawaguchi 5th Station). As we had no real plans of climbing Mt.Fuji when we left Kobe,we did not bring with us the required winter clothes and climbing gear. We were not that confident that we would be able to manage the cold at the top but we thought as we have come so far there is no point going back without climbing to the top station. We bought some minimal climbing gear(walking stick, torch light) and a kind of woolen T shirt thinking it would keep us warm enough.

We started climbing at around 5.30 pm in the evening. My regular visits to the gym during that period made me fit enough and climbing was not that difficult for me. My friend was impressed with my stamina and the speed at which i was able to climb. My friend was getting tired and suggested to me we will stop after 7th Station. I told him no way and gave him a few encouraging words to carry on. As we trekked through the night on the way to the top the wind was getting stronger and the few warm clothes on me were not enough to beat the cold. Till 8th station the cold was not really getting on to us. But when we reached 8th station it started getting on to me and when I saw around there were co-trekkers with much better warm clothes, the desire for warmth struck me.I took all the t-shirts I had in my back pack and wore it inside. Still it was not enough to beat the cold. The illusion of warmth made the cold go deep in to my spine and I was feeling really cold. I seem to be happier in this photo (the night mode in the camera was not properly set contributing to the ghost like photo and believe me I dont look so bad to be as horrific as a ghost:)) on the 8th station but actually I was feeling terrible because of the cold. It was around 9.30 in the night and we thought of taking some rest in a hut house in 8th station vying for the warmth of a hut house. But the un affordable cost(we needed it only for 3-4 hours) of the accommodation in the hut house did not allow us the luxury. We planned to spend the night in the cold. I was not able to sit as the cold got too much and i started shivering. My friend had better warm clothes and atleast was not shivering. The wind was killing me and I said to my friend I would prefer trekking instead of sitting in the cold.

We carried along on the long trek to the top taking frequent rests in between till the cold would get to me and we wouls start trekking again to beat the cold. We preferred walking briskly so as to beat the cold. As we were going near the top the wind was getting stronger and the cold worse. It was a terrible feeling and my friend started complaining to me I was foolish enough to bring him here and climbing Mt.Fuji to see the Sun Rise. Atleast with me I was happy to trek. He was neither happy with the cold nor with the trekking. But we moved shivering in the cold and trekking briskly to beat it. We reached the top station at around 3.15 am in the morning and sat down shivering waiting for the Sun rise. All along the way we enjoyed the beautiful sights of Mt.Fuji and the stars in the night. I was happy to be 3776m above sea level and thats quite a height although the cold was nerve wracking. People said that the sun would come out around 4.30 am. Japan is the land of morning sun as Sun rise happens pretty early in the morning. I knew that the Sun normally rises at 4.50 - 5 in the morning and it would be a long wait for us. I was constantly shivering and did not have anything to protect my head or ears from the cold. I don't remember anybody else was there like that including my friend. Finally the SUN started to break through the darkness at around 4.30 am in the morning. By 5 am the SUN rise happened and the sun rays beating on us were soothing although not enough to beat the cold on the top. My hands were shivering to take good shots of the sun rise. But my friend did take some good snaps of the sun 1 2 3 4.Thats me at the top down and out before the SUN and shivering in the cold. After seeing the spectacle of the SUN on top of the mountain I decided to climb down immediately so as to get to warmer parts. My friend was a bit tired and he decided to take some rest at the top before climbing down. Climbing down Mt.Fuji is said to be much tougher than going up as most people slip when they climb down but if you are careful and know where to keep your next step its not all that tough. I did not fall once on the climb down and I climbed down pretty fast as well(in about 2 Hrs). But I had previous experience of living in a hilly city in india and climbing small hills for the initial 13 years in my life. As the I was walking it was getting warmer and warmer and I returned to wearing only one t-shirt. So that was the climb down. Hope you enjoyed reading my Fuji experience.

Finally to all ambitious trekkers who have not climbed Mt.Fuji and would like to climb it, here are a few tips based on my experience.Climbing Mt.Fuji is not all that difficult as it is made out to be if you are fit and dont have breathing problems when on top.July,August is the only official time when Mt.Fuji is open for climbing although with special permission some experienced trekkers climb it during the off season but it is considered very risky. It is said lot of trekkers who climb Mt.Fuji during the winter dont return back. Anyways Just make sure you have the proper climbing gear and winter gear(huh...sure you need it). For climbing a head light, a walking stick and shoes with proper grip should get you through. Make sure you pack up light and carry only the warm clothes needed and some energy drink which you might need on the way to the top. I would suggest that you carry thermals and a thick leather jacket to beat from the cold. This should be enough to beat the cold. Dont give up on the way up. Think its near and its not too far off. Keep thinking this until you get to the top. The climb up is surely worth for the SUN rise. On the way down just be sure where to keep the next step. Happy trekking!!!

Last week there has been plenty of action because of this...

http://blogs.netapp.com/dave/2007/09/netapp-sues-sun.html for which Jonathan replied this

http://blogs.sun.com/jonathan/entry/on_patent_trolling for which Dave Hitz replied these

http://blogs.netapp.com/dave/2007/09/litigoperation-.html and http://blogs.netapp.com/dave/2007/09/sun-patent-team.html.

Interesting that CEOs use blog as means for fighting it out.

Also see what Dtrace founder bryan cantrill has to say on this

I am expecting Jeff Bonwick to say something on this. I would like to refrain from making any personal comments on what I feel about this. It is for the readers to follow the above links and make their own interpretation.

Joy of watching Henin win

  • Sep. 9th, 2007 at 7:21 PM
The happiness of a ardent sports fan doubles up when he sees a player whom he has predicted for greatness achieve that greatness. Thats what happens with me when I see Henin win. I have been following Henin since 2000 and I was impressed with her tennis after seeing 2-3 matches. I believed that she could be a future number 1 and also the one who could topple the powerful stronghold of william's sisters in womens tennis then. When I noticed that happen in the very famous french open semifinal in 2003 which she went on to win defeating serena williams, I knew that she would become the no 1 player in the world soon. Inspite of a hiatus due to health problems in 2004, today she won her seventh grandslam beating kuznetsova displaying speed, accuracy and precision in the court. She has been the best womens tennis player this season and todays win is a reinstatment of the fact that the she is the No 1 womens tennis player in the world currently. Hope she carries on and continues to be the No 1 player for a long time.

In other sports event this weekend, Alonso wins the italian grand prix cutting the lead to 3 points.Aleem Dar's dubious decisions spoils the final match at lords in cricket. Indian hockey is on the up with them leading 7-1 in the final when I am writing this.

Back to India and hoping to meet you

  • Aug. 8th, 2007 at 2:27 PM
So after 7 months of stay in Japan I am returning back to India today. Lately I have been busy travelling around Japan and did not find time to update my blog. I successfully climbed Mt.Fuji and went around tokyo. Will be writing a dedicated blog entry on my travel experience soon. So I am very happy to be going back to India and cannot wait longer to meet my mother.
My first overseas trip was a fun filled experience. Japan is a wonderful place with lovely people and really enjoyed being here. Expect another entry about my Japan experience soon.

Thanks to the AI flight being late I am able to write this from KIX(Kansai) airport. Hoping to meet all you friends in India. Will be in Bangalore from tomorrow morning. Just ping me and I will be more than happy to meet you.

Update: Was able to meet most of my friends and atleast speak to them by phone. Its always nice to speak to your close friends after a gap. I thoroughly enjoyed the company. I also visited my native in Trichy and saw Rajnis sivaji in a theatre there. Always a great experience to watch a Rajni movie in tamilnadu. On the work front I am back in Bangalore now and will continue working here for atleast 8 months or so.

I have not written about finance in my blog so far. May be because I am a novice in the field. But I have invested some money in the equity market in India over past year or so and now I earn my salary in yen, so financial implications are important for me.

So Dowjones(US bluechip market index) fell by 300 points due to housing concerns(as always with every fall) and subprime lending rates. The dows fall triggered a global sell off with markets in the world testing their reverse levels. India's sensex(bluechip index) lead the reverse run in the asia falling about 546 points or abt 3.5 percent. The correction was long overdue in the indian markets although the rational of the manic selling that happened today cannot be explained. So irrespective of what happens with Reliance and SBI results over the weekend we go in to monday waiting for global cues especially from the US.

The nikkei in japan fell by about 420 points or 2.4%. In midst all the frantic selling in the global markets globally, the yen rose because of carry trade unwinding. This is good news to many of my co-workers here. Also this gives me a chance to write about what is carry trading.

The lending rate in japan is 0.5 percent and is the lowest rate in the industrialized world. So lot of people borrow yen and move yen in to foreign markets so as to profit more. Thereby the yen is always sold to invest in other markets in other currencies like dollar, rupee etc., This is called carry trading. So naturally when US market goes up the Yen weakens against the dollar. So when the reverse happens the demand for Yen rises as carry trade unwinding happens. The yen infact rises against most of the currencies in the world when global market sell of happens.

Again to reinstate carry trading happens because the lending rate in japan is the lowest in the world and borrowing yen is cheaper. So people borrow yen and invest in other markets around the world. So whether the bank of japan will rise interest rate or not is a major factor which might contribute to the future of yen.A Japanese report today forecast by economists showed core consumer prices probably fell for a fifth straight month, undermining the Bank of Japan's argument to raise benchmark borrowing costs. So if the bank of japan does not rise the interest rate next month, the yen's rise should be short lived unless the global equity sell off continues.

So this might be right time to convert your hard earned yen to rupees...

Con quits kernel devlopment

  • Jun. 18th, 2007 at 6:56 AM
RSDL creator Con Kolivas has decided to end kernel development raising questions on the kernel development process. The rise of Ingo's CFS scheduler is one of the main reasons for this decision. Thanks Con for all the work on interactiveness in CPU scheduling.

Meanwhile it seems highly likely that Torvalds and Schwartz may meet for dinner. Something important on the horizon...

Schwartz invites Linus for dinner

  • Jun. 15th, 2007 at 5:09 PM
Interesting blog entry by SUN's CEO Jonathan Schwartz in response to Linus's mail.

http://blogs.sun.com/jonathan/entry/one_plus_one_is_fifty

http://lkml.org/lkml/2007/6/12/232

And ZFS is in the storm of it. I dont want to make any comments here, its left for the readers interpretation. But surely this is important and may lead to some changes in the OS industry. How soon and what, time is the answer.

But then SUN should also look at things like these and talk about Open Source.
